3-16-2025 Fishing Report
Starting to see some pollen on the water, spring is getting here. As much as I love winter fishing spring always gets me excited. There are so many choices this time of year. The crappie are on fire right now pulling jigs in the creeks on Clarks Hill. Greenwood should get really good any day now too. On Hartwell while pulling crappie jigs we are catching a mix of hybrids of all sizes, spotted bass and crappie. Its a great way to locate masses of hybrids then turn around and cast my little mini jigs I tie. Sunny days have been way way better than cloudy days this past couple weeks. I had a group with some kids on a sunny day this past weekend and we stayed busy the whole time. Then the next day was cloudy and I had some really good fishermen but we had to grind a bit more. We still got them a nice 3 man limit of hybrids plus some throw backs but it was frustrating seeing all those fish on the screen that had to be coaxed into eating knowing how good it was the day before.
Fishing in the Upstate rivers is about to be red hot as well. I offer perch and white bass trips in my jet boat in the river above Greenwood. Many days last year we had well north of 100 fish in a morning. All of this on ultralight tackle. It’s a fantastic trip for kids or adults who love to catch a bunch of fish. With the current in the rivers the perch fight really well and the white bass will take you to school. The stripers and hybrids will be hitting the rivers before month end too. On parts of Hartwell it’s already starting to happen.
Don’t think every fish in the lakes is in the rivers either. There is a big body of fish that stay on the lower end chasing herring that will begin to mass off the points more and more as the water warms.
This is also my favorite time of year to bass fish as well. The prespawn period on Greenwood and Hartwell is a really special time to catch big numbers of bass on the secondary points. Hard to beat a Carolina rigged trick worm during this period for numbers of fish of all sizes.
